How BAL ratings work.
There are six levels within the Australian Standard 1530-8-1 (Fire Zones) that relate to the Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) and the descriptors of those levels are:
BAL Rating is a description of predicted bushfire attack and levels of exposure
BAL-LOW
There is insufficient risk to warrant specific construction requirements
BAL-12.5
Ember attack
CycloneSafe and EnviroSafe Windows:
- Made with strong aluminium frames.
- Window openings are protected either internally or externally by steel mesh screens with a maximum aperture of 2mm.
- Screen fitting ensures there is no gap greater than 3mm in diameter.
- All exposed external hardware is metal.
- Minimum 4mm double glazed (4 + 12 + 4) safety glass, which satisfies the requirements of all glass within 400mm of the ground, or other structures within 18 degrees of horizontal.
CycloneSafe and EnviroSafe External Side-Hung Doors:
- Made with strong aluminium frames.
- Minimum 5mm double glazed (5 + 12 + 5) with compliant glass.
- Doors fit snuggly in openings and will exclude ember attack.
- Draught seals are standard.
- Screens (when fitted) are steel mesh with a maximum aperture of 2mm.
- Screens (when fitted) ensure there is no gap greater than 3mm in diameter.
CycloneSafe and EnviroSafe External Sliding Doors:
- Made with strong aluminium frames.
- Minimum 5mm double glazed (5 + 12 + 5) with compliant glass.
- Doors fit snuggly in openings and will exclude ember attack.
- Draught seals are standard.
- Screens (when fitted) are steel mesh with a maximum aperture of 2mm.
- Screens (when fitted) ensure there is no gap greater than 3mm in diameter.
BAL-19
Increasing levels of ember attack and burning debris, ignited by windborne embers, together with increasing heat flux between 12.5 and 19kW per m2
CycloneSafe and EnviroSafe Windows:
- Made with strong aluminium frames.

CycloneSafe and EnviroSafe External Side-Hung Doors:
- Made with strong aluminium frames.
- Minimum 5mm double glazed (5 + 12 + 5) with compliant glass.
- Doors fit snuggly in openings, excluding draught and the incursion of embers and burning debris, when closed.
- Draught seals are standard.
- Screens (when fitted) are steel mesh with a maximum aperture of 2mm.
- Screens (when fitted) ensure there is no gap greater than 3mm in diameter.

BAL-29
Increasing levels of ember attack and burning debris, ignited by wind-borne embers, together with increasing heat flub between 19 and 29kW per m2
CycloneSafe and EnviroSafe Windows:
- Made with strong aluminium frames.
- Window openings are protected either internally or externally by steel mesh screens with a maximum aperture of 2mm.
- Screen fitting ensures there is no gap greater than 3mm in diameter.

BAL-40
Increasing levels of ember attack and burning debris, ignited by windborne embers, together with increasing heat flux with the increased likelihood of exposure to flames
CycloneSafe and EnviroSafe Windows:
- Made with strong aluminium frames.
- Window openings are protected either internally or externally by steel mesh screens with a maximum aperture of 2mm.
- Screen fitting ensures there is no gap greater than 3mm in diameter.

BAL-FZ
Direct exposure to flames from the fire front, in addition to heal flux and ember attack.
CycloneSafe and EnviroSafe products have not been tested for use in BAL-FZ and are not recommended for use in those areas.
Summary:
Any window/door manufacturer can meet AS1530-8-1 either by individual laboratory testing or by following “deemed to comply” rules, set out in the Standard.
CycloneSafe and EnviroSafe Windows and Doors are supplied standard with SS mesh insect screens and therefore automatically meet “deemed to comply” rules up to BAL40.
